Freesat - What is it?

Freesat from Sky is a British non subscription based satellite service from BSkyB which gives viewers access to 200 channels. While many of the channels available on the platform can be accessed with standard free-to-air satellite decoders available from providers other than BSkyB, the Freesat from Sky allows access to five additional channels: Channel 4, Five, Five US, Five Life, and Sky Three; which are encrypted with the VideoGuard system used by Sky Digital.

The BBC hold a trademark Freesat, which it is now using for its free-to-air satellite service. It is therefore expected that BSkyB may have to rebrand its service.

Freesat is a BBC-owned trademark for free to air digital satellite television services targeting the UK. It is used as a tradename by two, differing systems, one of which is not purely free-to-air. Both of these systems draw or will draw their signals from the SES Astra/Eutelsat owned Astra 2 and Eurobird satellites located at 28.2 and 28.5 degrees east of south respectively. The service will be available for a one off payment and include a set top box and Installation.

Freesat will feature HD channels, and will be available free of charge and without contract to the whole of the UK, providing a fix for the problem the BBC are facing of how to provide a full service to existing customers who cannot receive Freeview, after analogue transmissions are shut down. The new service will require a receiver that will enter retail outlets in 2008. Plans to put the new HD channels on Freeview too, following a re-arrangement of the multiplexes, were announced in January 2008.
